Making The Most of a Back Yard

Homeowners Richard and Christina Stefani attended a C&R Kitchen and Bath Seminar because they wanted to get ideas for remodeling their kitchen. However, while at the seminar they saw photos of a back yard ‘addition’ and came away intrigued with the possibility of building a back yard studio. Richard is an award winning photographer and was craving some designated work space. The Stefanis had room in their back yard for a strategically placed building, so they began the design process with C&R.

The simple design effectively ticked all the boxes on their wish list. The studio is connected to their main house via a porch/breezeway/deck providing a separate, sheltered entry to the studio for clients and visitors. Richard is so pleased with this space that he recently quipped “If I saw this and it wasn’t mine, I’d be jealous!”

The studio fulfils its purpose perfectly and turned out to be even more useful than the couple had first imagined.  According to Christina, “we use it as a client consultation room, shooting area for people and products, a gallery, an extra family room, a movie theater (we project movies and old-fashioned slide shows/multimedia presentations on the smooth back wall), and even hold dinner parties in it. It really is multi-purpose.”

This past week, Beth Rhoades visited Pratt & Larson, one of her favorite tile suppliers. Beth is a C&R Remodeling Consultant who also happens to have great taste in pretty much everything involving home design. She’s always on the lookout for new and interesting products. This lamp display caught her eye and she asked me to share these fabulous ceramic lamps with our readers. The entire lamp is made of ceramic tile!

Without greatly modifying the kitchen layout, C&R’s Designers added a good deal of extra storage and accommodation. Floor to ceiling cabinets, book cases, and a desk area provide more than enough options for a variety of storage and work uses.

A neutral color palette unifies the kitchen, dining and laundry areas and creates a sense of pleasing calm. The entire space now offers a cohesive visual flow in addition to convenience and livability.

This kitchen/dining/laundry room remodel turned out so well that it was featured in a Salem, Oregon Tour of Remodeled Homes. Tour visitors were particularly pleased to see how remodeling–even on a tight budget–can yield impressive results.
